EXCITING AND FRESH GROUP OF
18TH AND 19TH CENTURY American and English paintings, furniture
and decorations from the home of a Bronxville, NY collector,
a prominent Dutchess Co., NY collector, the estate of Reverend
Christman, Claverack, NY and several New York and New England
estates.
From Marjorie Lawrence, “The Mother of Pillows” who
operated the fashionable Pillowry in the Upper East Side, we
have pillows, rugs and kilims along with distinctive 18th,
19th & 20th century textile fragments.Over 50 artists
were represented in the sale including American luminaries
Finster, Goodwin, Hibbard, Kaula, Kuhn, Lucioni,
Parton, Ryder, Waugh, Wengenroth and Whistler; among the
European art offerings were works by Berne-Bellecour, Clare,
Dubois, Kennedy, LaFontaine, Laurencin, Moigniez, Orloff
and Sindling.

STUNNING ARRAY OF ENGLISH AND
CONTINENTAL paintings, furniture, silver and decorations.We
had a large selection of primarily 19th c. paintings from
an estate in New Jersey. There was a fine group of Biedermeier
furniture & European decoration from a collector in Brooklyn
Heights & an impressive Russian mahogany ormolu & marble
mounted cabinet from a New Jersey collection. On offer from
2 Greenwich collectors was a great selection of English furniture
including a Regency round mahogany dining table, a Regency
mahogany cabinet, a George III mahogany secretary & a
William IV sideboard. Also of note was a George II carved
walnut wing armchair. There was a wonderful group of tea
caddies from a Wassaic collector & a splendid pair
of Chinese reverse paintings on glass from a Canadian collector.Among
the French items for sale were a superb 18th c. Regence
giltwood mirror, a pair of 19th c. Louis XV-style giltwood
fauteuils, a Louis-XV-style commode and a large assortment
of decorative objects.
Artists represented included H. Stone, Desanges, Hollander,
F. Fabbi, C. Huldah, L. Bakalowicz, L. Mallebranche, H.
Lengo Martinez, A. Mucha & J. Pascin. Silver on offer featured
makers such as Ann & William Bateman, Henry Chawner,
Paul Storr & Tiffany & Co. Finally, there was a large
variety of pottery & porcelain, both European & Asian,
a large group of Asian artifacts & a large assortment
of ormolu mounted opaline glass table articles.

PROPERTY FROM A DISTINGUISHED
NEW YORK FOUNDATION offer property from a distinguished
New York Foundation. The collection was assembled over 30
years
and features a large group of American, English and Continental
miniatures, Prior-Hamblin School portraits, and portraits
of statesmen (including Washington, Churchill, Eisenhower & FDR).
Among the silver items offered were a George II salver, George
II & George III marrow scoops, an ornate Japanese coffee
pot, American sugar nips, possibly by Christian Tuthill,
Philadelphia, a large French coffret with extensive figural
decoration and a fine American coin silver coffee service
by Wolcott & Co., Boston. There was a collection of
Art Nouveau and Art Deco pottery and glass from the estate
of
Dr. Robert Koch, the noted Louis Comfort Tiffany scholar,
who dedicated 50 years to the study of this virtuoso American
artist. From the Estate of William Free, Millbrook, New
York, there were several lots of English and Continental
furniture
as well as a charming oil painting of a young lass and
her large, faithful dog. American and European artists
represented
in the sale included V. Palmaroli, J. Burgaritzsky, F.
Bergamini, E. Sloane, J. Whorf, B. Vonnoh, T. Doughty (attrib.),
L.
Nesbitt, L. Neogrady, E. Tatafiore, C. Chichester among
many others. Also on offer was a nice selection of English,
American,
French and Continental furniture and decoration including
a spectacular Louis XVI giltwood sunburst mirror and a
17th c. tapestry fragment in rich colors. |

DIVERSE ARRAY OF MATERIALS;
there was an interesting group of fine American furniture
and folk art from private collections in New York and Westport,
Ct. There was a great selection of English and Continental
furniture including a fine pair of George III satinwood card
tables. Of special interest was a superb pair of Chinese
export painting in their original frames. Many prints of
historical Americans were in the sale; especially appealing
was a color print of linen, circa 1830, of George Washington.
The fine art included an interesting mix of 19th and 20th
century American and European oil paintings by H. Newell,
H. B. Brown, B. Lamotte, S. Eisendieck, J. Bedrthelsen and
D. Ramos. Works on paper included pieces by L. Krasner, R.
Lichtenstein, A. Warhol, A. Calder, D. Hockny, M. Chagall,
T. Foujita and C. Oldenburg. |

ECLECTIC ARRAY OF FINE AND DECORATIVE
FURNITURE and art. It included a group of tribal and oceanographic
works from a private collector; 50 lots of mineral specimens
from the estate of Henry Sommerfreund, a well known gem
cutter and dealer and an interesting assortment of Asian
articles,
from snuff bottles to scrolls.Artists represented in the
sale included Wengenroth, Pearlstein, Vertes, Gorman, Dufy,
Maillol, Philipp, Semerand and Laurencin
among many others.
There was also a good selection of portraits and portrait
miniatures.
Among the furniture on offer was a first rate Federal collection
from a New York home and a George III oak Welsch dresser.
We also had a large assortment of porcelain and decorative
objects from around the world.
